# Taxonomy-based Contextual Ads Targeting
Contextual advertising allows you to target the context most relevant to your ads. It utilizes semantic-based targeting, which uses content metadata to serve ads that align with your editorial content through a simple, single embed code.
Contextual advertising relies on keywords, phrases, media channels, and other available information to provide the most relevant query responses—without using cookies.
By using semantic analysis to process the content, our IAB-compliant taxonomy extracts and defines targeting data from the content, classifying it into groups and categories. Intelligent algorithms manage how the data is cataloged and matched to queries.
#### Setting Up Contextual Targeting
Ensure that the **\[iab\_taxonomy\]** macro is added to your ad tag URL. This macro collects your page metadata, passes it to Google Ad Manager (GAM), and matches it with your targeting campaign. The **\[iab\_taxonomy\]** macro will be replaced with IAB category information.
For example, if your content tags include keywords related to animated movies, the query parameters returned will relate to categories like **Movies** or **Television**. In VAST, the **iab\_taxonomy** macro will be used to pass the relevant set of categories. Keywords like "cartoon," "movies," "TV shows," and "animation" will match categories such as **Movies**, **Television**, and/or their subcategories like **Animation Movies** and **Animation TV**.
